The Mets avoided a sweep at the hands of the annoying Cardinals thanks to an effective start from R.A. Dickey and a three-run home run hit by Ike Davis. Dickey gave up just two runs in 6.2 innings while striking out five and walking one. Adam Wainwright hit an inexplicable home run off Dickey on an 0-2 pitch in the third inning to account for the Cardinals' first run. That was the only extra-base hit Dickey allowed. The Cardinals' second run scored when Allen Craig hit into a double play with runners on first and third and no outs in the seventh inning.
Josh Thole singled home Justin Turner in the second inning to give the Mets a 1-0 lead, and Lucas Duda drew a bases loaded walked to score Mike Baxter in the third inning. The backbreaker came when Davis hit a three-run dong off Wainwright in the fifth inning which gave the Mets a 5-1 lead. Andres Torres added an RBI infield single in the eighth inning to cap the day. Baxter, Daniel Murphy, Davis, Duda, Turner, and Thole were each on base at least twice.
Josh Edgin, Jon Rauch, and Frank Francisco combined to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Dickey.
We knew it was over when...
Dickey took the mound. His win-loss record is now 18-4, if that's your bag.
