On a Friday night battle between two moribund teams, the Mets prevailed 4-3, thanks to a three-run homer from Lucas Duda in the bottom of the sixth. The Mets were trailing 2-1 up to that point when Duda ripped a Brad Hand fastball into the bullpen in right-center field. Four runs would be just enough for Jonathon Niese, who allowed three runs in six-and-one-third innings—two of which scored on Giancarlo Stanton solo homers—while striking out seven and walking none.
The Marlins got on the board in the second on Stanton's first homer. The Mets responded in the second on a long solo homer by Andrew Brown. It was the Mets first homer of the homestand, after being out-homered 14-0 up to that point. Miami took the lead in the fifth on a Donovan Solano RBI double, before the Mets retook the lead for good on Duda's shot.
Stanton got the Marlins a little closer in the seventh with another solo shot. After that, the Mets managed their way through the rest of the seventh and eighth with the triumvirate of Scott Atchison, Vic Black and Pedro Feliciano. In the ninth, LaTroy Hawkins set the Marlins down 1-2-3, finishing the night off by getting Logan Morrison to ground out to second.
