This one got ugly early. The Nationals took a 2-0 lead just two batters into the game, after Denard Span and Ryan Zimmerman hit back-to-back home runs off Carlos Torres. The dingers didn't stop; Jayson Werth hit a three-run home run in the third inning and Tyler Moore added a solo shot in the fourth. When Torres departed after that fourth inning, the Nats had a 6-0 lead which felt like 20-0, considering the anemic performance of the Mets' bats against Gio Gonzalez.
Gonzalez tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking two. His no-hit bid was broken up when pinch hitter Zach Lutz singled to lead off the frame. And it was barely a hit. The ball off Lutz's bat struck chalk down the first base line, just an inch or two from being a foul ball.
The Nationals capped their scoring when Wilson Ramos hit a three-run home run off Greg Burke in the fifth inning. If there was one positive from the Mets this game, it's that five relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings after Burke departed. Also, David Wright was in the building, as seen in the photo above.
I have nothing more to say about this awful game, so I am going to list each Mets player who appeared tonight, and whether or not I want to see the player on the Mets' 2014 Opening Day roster. This is a gut reaction list; not much thought has gone into it:
- Eric Young, Jr. - yes
- Daniel Murphy - yes
- Andrew Brown - no
- Lucas Duda - no, I want Jose Abreu, give me the Cuban
- Justin Turner - no
- Juan Lagares - yes
- Wilmer Flores - no
- Travis d'Arnaud - yes
- Zach Lutz - no
- Josh Satin - yes
- Carlos Torres - yes, but only as a long reliever/spot starter
- Greg Burke - no
- David Aardsma - no
- Sean Henn - no
- Tim Byrdak - no
- Scott Atchison - no
- Gonzalez Germen - no
The Mets continue their four-game series with the Nationals Tuesday night at 7:10 pm. The pitching matchup is Dillon Gee vs Ryan Zimmerman. Here's to a better game than was played tonight.
