The New York Mets do not plan to non-tender first baseman Ike Davis this winter, sources have told Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.
Davis, who began this season as the Mets starting first baseman, has had a disappointing campaign offensively, batting .205/.326/.334 in 377 plate appearances. The first baseman also spent some time this season with Triple-A Las Vegas, and is currently out for the remainder of the year with a strained oblique muscle.
New York does not want to let Davis walk this off-season without receiving any compensation, according to Rubin. The first baseman, who made $3.125 million this year, will be eligible for arbitration. The Mets don't expect Davis to receive a big raise next year, and could have a case for salary reduction.
The Mets could end up trading Davis during the offseason. Lucas Duda is expected to shift from left field to full-time first base next year, creating a log-jam at the position. New York will also need to find a spot for third base prospect Wilmer Flores when David Wright returns next season.
