The Mets avoided a sweep in Cleveland with a 2-1 victory this afternoon. Daisuke Matsuzaka made his best start yet with the Mets—by far—with six strikeouts, three walks, and just one run allowed in five-and-two-thirds innings.
Justin Turner got the Mets on the board in the fourth inning with his second no-doubt home run of the weekend. Matsuzaka loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning, and Terry Collins brought in Vic Black. He hit Asdrubal Cabrera with a pitch to force in the tying run but finished the inning without giving Cleveland the lead.
Black, Pedro Feliciano, and Frank Francisco preserved the tie until the ninth. Matt den Dekker led of that frame with a single, Anthony Recker bunted him to second, and Eric Young hit a double to drive him in. That was it for the Mets in the top of the ninth, but LaTroy Hawkins allowed just a bloop single to Jason Giambi in a scoreless bottom half of the inning.
