The final series of the season between the Braves and Mets came and went without anyone getting stepped on or hit in the face, so that's good. Atlanta won two out of three for a 7-2 homestand. The magic number for clinching the division is currently 10.
GOOD
B.J. Upton: B.J. was 4-10 in the series with a pair of RBI. His two hits on Tuesday pushed his average to .200 for the first time this year. It's been oft repeated that September is B.J.'s best month, but he got started a little early this year. Since August 28, B.J. is hitting .407 with five RBI.
Andrelton Simmons: "Simba" tallied three hits in the series and hit the game-winning home run Tuesday, a two-run shot in the seventh inning. The homer was his 13th of the season.
Evan Gattis: El Oso Blanco made a spectacular return with a 3-hit game Tuesday and hit the game-tying homer right before Simmons hit his. It appears his brief stint at Gwinnett did him some good. He had been 0-16 prior to his time in the minors.
Freddy Garcia: He's only been in two games with the Braves, but Garcia has proven so far to be a relief to the Atlanta bullpen. In 7.1 innings, four hits allowed, zero runs.
Freddie Freeman: 4-13, two homers, six RBI including a 5-RBI game Monday. He may very well be the next Met nemesis: his 12 HR against the Mets are his most against any team and he now boasts a .306 career batting average against them. He has now matched his 94 RBI from last year with 23 games remaining.
Kris Medlen: He earned his 12th win of the season and struck out nine in seven innings. He didn't walk anyone, maintaining a stretch of nine straight starts with ≤1 walk. You have to go back to July 7 to a start where he walked more than one hitter. His nine strikeouts match a season high; he matched the feat May 24, also against the Mets.
Jordan Schafer: He had a four-hit game with three stolen bases on Monday before leaving with a lower back strain. In addition, he suffered a contusion on his left quad when he fouled off a pitch in a pinch-hit appearance on Tuesday. He is expected to be ready for the series in Philadelphia starting Friday.
BAD
Dan Uggla: His eye procedure was supposed to help his hitting, but Uggla has just four hits in eight games since returning to the lineup August 28. He's still drawing his share of walks with seven of them in that same span.
Justin Upton: He 3-17 since getting hit in the left hand August 29 and has zero RBI since his home run August 22 in St. Louis. Two of those three hits came in the opening game of the series.
UGLY
Kameron Loe: In making a spot start to give Julio Teheran a bit of rest, Loe gave up five runs in 4.1 innings and two home runs on Wednesday. So far with the Braves, Loe has allowed eight runs in seven innings with five walks.
