Meet the Mets
Okay, it was against the Houston Astros. And yes, they didn't score more than three runs in any of the games. And oh yeah, it was against the Houston Astros. But the Mets finally won a series thanks to a big ol' walkoff dong by Ike Davis.
Sandy Alderson talked about 2013 on Sunday. (Hey it beats talking about 2012) Sounds like the payroll will be about the same, but Alderson wants to lock up Dickey and Wright long term. Dickey sounds open to the idea. So if I may be so bold, Sandy, I suggest paying the men.
Dillon Gee's shoulder has gotten the all clear from doctors, while Murphy's shoulder is not doing quite as well. He felt a pop during an at-bat in Sunday's game and will have an MRI today.
Zack Wheeler twirled his best start since his promotion to Buffalo yesterday afternoon.
The Post's Mike Puma is reporting that Terry Collins' job is safe. Also safe: Luis Hernandez's second base job. (/obligatory)
You'll likely be seeing more Duda in left field with the big ox back in the majors. So far it's been a mixed bag.
BREAKING: The Mets have been bad in the second half.
Finally, we say goodbye to the Astros series with Mark Simon's 'Met'rics.
Around the NL East
A strong Tim Hudson start got the Barves a split in their four-game set with the Giants. Atlanta again gains ground on the struggling Nats who were swept by the Phillies this past weekend. And after the game, Tim Hudson had some advice for Tim Lincecum. Some sexy advice.
The Marlins put on a laser show against the Dodgers, bashing four home runs en route to a 6-2 victory.
Around MLB
The Yanks won the rubber game of their series with Cleveland, and picked up a half game in the standings over the Issac'd Rays.
A strong outing from Max Scherzer kept the Tigers two and a half back of the White Sox in the AL Central.
With the Dodgers and the Giants both losing, the Diamondbacks had an opportunity to pick up some ground, but lost again to the Padres. Arizona also made a trade, dealing Joe Saunders to the Orioles. Umm, did anyone tell the Diamondbacks that they are kind of in a playoff race? Dealing Drew and Saunders while having a puncher's chance in a weak division seems kind of odd.
Don't look now, but here come the Cardinals. Hey, remember when the Mets signed Jason Bay instead of Matt Holliday because they thought Bay's swing was better suited to Citi Field? Oh, you do? So do I!
Fortunately for the Reds, Joey Votto is on the comeback trail.
And finally, in good news for all humanity, Vin Scully will return to the booth to call Dodgers games next year.
