Jon Niese takes the mound this evening as the Mets and Nationals play late on ESPN. It'll be Ross Ohlendorf opposing him on the hill for the Nats.
Ike Davis hurt his oblique swinging the bat on a sacrifice fly and it sounds like he's finished for the season. With the Mets needing to replace Ike on the roster, they'll promoteZach Lutz to the majors. The Mets are also adding Tim Byrdak and Vic Black to the bullpen today, and they demotedRobert Carson to Vegas. Getting demoted on September 1st is a bad sign.
Jeurys Familia is back in game action today with the St. Lucie Mets.
The Mets will continue to keep a close eye on Zack Wheeler's workload through the rest of the season.
Juan Lagares picked up his 12th outfield assist, tying the Mets' rookie record that was held by Tsuyoshi Shinjo. Only semi-related but apparently, Shinjo is a porn star in Japan now.
With Vegas losing a couple of arms to call-ups, the Mets signed veteran reliever Cory Wade to a minor league contract. Wade was released by the Rays recently.

Around the NL East
The Phillieslost to the Cubs 4-3 yesterday. They also announced a pair of trades before the waiver deadline, movingJohn McDonald to the Red Sox and thenMichael Young to the Dodgers.
B.J. Upton's walk-off single propelled the Braves to a 5-4 victory over the Marlins. Jose Fernandez will make two more starts before getting shut down for the season.
Around the Majors
The Pirates continue to go for it as they acquiredJustin Morneau from the Twins for outfielder Alex Presley and pitcher Duke Welker. The Pirates are entering September in first place for the first time since 1992.
Yasiel Puig made another great throw yesterday. But the Dodgers should totally bench him because he's too flashy or makes mental errors or showed up late one time or something.
It's been a long fall from grace for Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard, who was DFA'd this morning. He'd be an interesting buy low candidate for the Mets to see if they could fix him.
Grant Brisbee says if you're a team looking to add dingers this offseason, Jose Abreu is the guy to get.
