Jeremy Hefner's Tommy John surgery is a success

It would have been kind of sad to hear that Jeremy Hefner was having Tommy John surgery this season. After all, the journeyman from Oklahoma was going through a breakout season that featured a ridiculous stretch in June in which he was the Mets' best pitcher.

It would have been sad, but Mets fans were kind of full on depression after the news that Matt Harvey had a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. Still, Hefner is a pitcher who will be missed. As the Harvey injury indicates, you can never have enough pitching depth.

Hefner was acquired by the Mets via waivers after the 2011 season and made his major league debut for the club in 2012. This season, Hefner joined the rotation full-time and despite his 82 ERA+, he was quite valuable because of the void in the rotation left by Johan Santana's shoulder injury and Jon Niese's own shoulder woes.

It's unclear what if any role Hefner will have with the Mets when he's healthy enough to pitch again, but we wish him a speedy recovery.
