Mets Daily Farm Report - 8/28/13: Records Were Meant To Be Broken

AAA -Las Vegas 51s (78-59)__________________________________

LAS VEGAS, COLORADO SPRINGS (Box)

Giancarlo Alvarado got touched up early, with Colorado Springs scoring six runs off of him in the first three innings, four of them earned. In the 1^st, Josh Rutledge hit a ground rule double and was driven in by an Xavier Nady sac fly. In the 2^nd, Sky Sox centerfielder Tim Wheeler hit an RBI single and Rutledge came up big again, stroking a line drive into left field that cleared the bases. In the 3^rd, catcher Lars Davis scored when Ruben Tejada committed a throwing error attempting to throw out Tyler Chatwood out at first. The 51s scored in the 2^nd inning, so no matter what would happen, at least they wouldn't be shut out. Wouldn't you know it, Las Vegas added to their run total. In the top of the 7^th, the 51s scored three runs off of Dan Houston, narrowing their deficit to 6-4. Unfortunately, Jack Leathersich made what is presumably his last AAA appearance this season and gave up three runs in his inning of work, putting the 51s back in a considerable hole. Wouldn't you know it, Las Vegas added to their run total again! In the top of the 8^th, the 51s scored five runs off of Manny Corpas. Kirk Nieuwenhuis drove in two with a single, and Mike Baxter stroked a three-run home run that tied the game. Unfortunately, D.J. Mitchell gave up four runs in his inning of work, putting the 51s back in a hole. Wouldn't you know it, Las Vegas added to their run total again! In the top of the 9^th, Brandon Hicks hit an RBI-single and scored himself on a wild pitch, and Zach Lutz hit a sac fly. Eric Campbell came to the plate with the tying run on second, and the winning run at first, but he was unable to come through and grounded out weakly to second base to end the game.

BINGHAMTON 3, BOWIE 2 (Box)

The B-Mets scored three runs, all of them coming in the 2^nd inning, but against Logan Verrett and the Binghamton bullpen, that would be all the B-Mets needed. Cory Vaughn's home run in the 2^nd ended a five-game home run drought, and Richard Lucas' sac fly gave Binghamton their first lead since Saturday. With the win, Binghamton set a franchise record with 83 wins. In addition, Jeff Walters notched his 37^th save, also new franchise record and the four strikeouts recorded by Verrett, Chasen Bradford, and Adam Kolarek brought Binghamton's total to 1,145 strikeouts for the season, a new franchise record.

CHARLOTTE 2, St. LUCIE 4 (Box)

St. Lucie scored four runs in the game's first two innings, and would fail to push another runner across the plate for the rest of the ballgame. Angel Cuan made two mistakes, and both resulted in home runs, but fortunately for St. Lucie, both blasts were of the solo variety, resulting in minimal damage.

Short-A - Brooklyn Cyclones (35-31)

TRI-CITY 3, BROOKLYN 3 (Box)

Despite a hiccup in the third inning that cost the team three runs and the lead, Dawrin Frias was pretty dominant. The Dominican right-hander mowed down 11 ValleyCats on his way to what would wind up a no-decision. The Cyclones originally got on the board in the 3^rd, when Gavin Cecchini hit an RBI double, advanced to third on the throw, and then scampered home when Tri-City starter Michael Feliz let loose a wild pitch. After Frias' gave up the lead, Feliz and the ValleyCats bullpen fired off inning after inning of scoreless ball, and the end of the game quickly approached. In the bottom of the 8^th, after Cecchini grounded out, L.J. Mazzilli hit his fourth home run of the year, sending an errant J.D. Osborne pitch over the left field fence, tying the game. Brooklyn had a chance to tack on some additional runs, loading the bases, but the ValleyCats were able to land on their feet and escape danger unharmed. In the 9^th and 10^th innings, the Cyclones were able to get runners on first and second, but were unable to cash in either time. Luckily, the ValleyCats were having just as much trouble pushing that winning run across the plate, so both teams kept playing, and playing, and playing, long into the night. Where's Shawn Marcum when you need him? Finally, in the 16^th inning, runs were scored. Regrettably, it was the ValleyCats that scored them. In his second inning of work, Cristian Chivilli walked a batter and hit a batter to start the inning- A sac fly and a single scored both. The Cyclones had their best chance, with Cecchini, Mazzilli and Jared King due up in the bottom of the inning. All three struck out swinging against Gonzalo Sanudo to end the game.

Because the IronBirds lost to the Lowell Spinners, Brooklyn and Aberdeen remained tied for first place.

The Pulaski Mariners got of to an early lead, tagging Yoan Gonzalez for three runs in the game's first three innings. Kingsport evened things with a three run 5^th inning, and then scored the go-ahead and an insurance run in the 6^th and 7^th, respectively. Alberto Baldonado shut Pulaski down for his two innings of work, striking out four and inducing two groundballs, and Robert Coles worked around a walk and a passed ball to lock down his 6^th save for Kingsport.

Dawrin Frias was dealing last night, striking out eleven batters in six innings, but the fact is, that became nothing but an afterthought because that long game. The same goes with Brandon Hicks, who went 4-5 with a triple. His prowess at the plate gets overshadowed by Las Vegas' loss. The two can commiserate, and share Star of the Night honors.

Goat of the Night

I'm going with Cristian Chivilli tonight, though Jack Leathersich and D.J. Mitchell both deserve it as well. While the latter two put Las Vegas into unnecessary holes, Chivilli gave up the go-ahead runs in Brooklyn's extra inning loss because of a walk and a hit batsman. Losing a game like that stings a bit more- especially in the 16^th inning.
