Mets Daily Farm Report - 8/8/13: P-P-P-Puppy Power!

AA -Binghamton Mets (72-44)_____________________________________

ALTOONA 5, BINGHAMTON 4 (Box)

Despite little Wilfredo Tovar hitting not one, but two home runs, the B-Mets found themselves on the wrong end of the score against Altoona. Erik Goeddel pitched decently, but he came down with a case of the yips in the 3rd inning, leading to three unearned runs. Doing his best Matt Garza impression, Goeddel was unable to cleanly field a sacrifice bunt, allowing two runs to score. The very next batter bunted as well, and Goeddel once more failed to field the ball, leading to another run. A third batter attempted to bunt in the inning, but his efforts to keep the ball fair proved fruitless, and he struck out on a foul bunt. The three-run 3rd put Binghamton behind 3-1, with the B-Mets' first run coming in the 2nd on Tovar's first homer of the night. In the 4th, Cory Vaughn hit a solo home run, keeping his hot streak going and closing the gap to just one run. Unfortunately, in the 7th, Armando Rodriguez let things get a little out of control. He allowed a single, and then threw a pick-off attempt into the outfield, allowing the runner to scamper all the way to third. One Mel Rojas triple and a squeeze play  later, Binghamton found themselves down by three. In the bottom of the inning, Darrell Ceciliani got himself thrown out of the game arguing balls and strikes in the middle of his at-bat (as did manager Pedro Lopez, protecting his player). Pinch-hitter Travis Taijeron finished the turn at the plate by drawing a single, and Tovar put an emphatic exclamation on his night by blasting another home run, bringing Binghamton within a run. The B-Mets were unfortunately unable to get to Curve reliever Ryan Beckman or closer Luis Angel Sanz and lost a tough one, ending their winning streak.

ST. LUCIE 5, BRADENTON 8 (Box)

Domingo Tapia got rocked, plain and simple. He didn't make it past the second inning, needing 51 pitches to face 13 batters, all while giving up seven runs. St. Lucie surprisingly kept themselves in the game, as the Marauders failed to score a run after the third- to their credit, though, they did score eight runs in those three innings. The Mets scored a run in the 6^th, and netted a pair in the 7^th, but the hole that Tapia dug was too deep to escape out of. At the very least, the offense kept the game respectable.

Lo-A -Savannah Sand Gnats(21-19 / 64-45)__________________________________

CHARLESTON 9, SAVANNAH 7 (Box)

The Sand Gnats and the RiverDogs both had dud performances by their starting pitchers. Charleston's starter, Dan Camarena, gave up seven runs (four earned) in four plus innings, while Savannah's starter, Marcos Camarena (no relation) gave up six runs (five earned) in five innings of work. The game turned into a battle of bullpens, and the Sand Gnats found themselves on the losing side. Tyler Vanderheiden was brought in in the 6th, alongside a flurry of defensive changes, and promptly gave up three runs, including a Greg Bird two-run homer. Wanel Mesa pitched three scoreless innings for the Gnats, but so did RiverDog relievers Tyler Webb, James Pazos, and closer Ben Paullus. Looking at the positives of this game, Brandon Nimmo had three hits in the game, including a double- his third extra-base hit in as many games. His two doubles in August put him two behind his entire output from July (4), and his one home run matches his entire output from July (1).

Short-A - Brooklyn Cyclones (24-24)

CONNECTICUT 3, BROOKLYN 4 (Box)

The Tigers took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, but it wouldn't last long, as Brooklyn tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd thanks to Chase Edwards's lack of control. After recording the first two outs, the youngster allowed a single, and then gave up three consecutive walks, forcing in the tying run. The game would stay tied until he 5th, when L.J. Mazzilli made a throwing error that allowed an unearned run. The offense had Robert Gsellman's back, and weren't about to put him at risk for a loss. In the bottom of the inning, Alex Sanchez drove in a run, tying the game once more. In the 7th, against David Wynn, Connecticut was able to push a run across one more time. The Cyclones responded by scoring not one, but two in the bottom of the 8th. With runners on the corners, Jonathan Clark hit a ground ball through the hole into right for a run, and Tomas Nido followed that with an RBI single right up the originator. John Mincone came in to pitch the 9th, and worked around a two-out single to notch his 6th save of the season.

Rk - Kingsport Mets (26-19)_____________________________

PULASKI 4, KINGSPORT 5 (Box)

The Pulaski Mariners scored two unearned runs off of Kingsport starter Yoan Gonzalez in the 2nd inning, but that would be all they were able to muster against the Cuban lefty. Gonezalez would end up going six innings, giving up seven hits and those two unearned runs, while allowing no walks and striking seven Pulaski batters out. When he left in the 6th, he was on the ledger for a win, thanks to a Kingsport offensive explosion in the 4th inning that saw the team score five runs. They tacked on a run in the 6^th and 7^th, but those runs would prove unneeded. Pulaski would go on to score only two more runs in the game, both coming in the 8^th inning.
