Mets Daily Farm Report - 8/7/13: A Thinner System Still Delivers

LAS VEGAS 3, MEMPHIS 5 (Box)

The first half of the game belonged to the Redbirds. While shutting out the 51s, they scored four runs themselves- one off of starter Giancarlo Alvarado in the bottom of the 3^rd and four in the 6^th off of relievers D.J. Mitchell and Jack Leathersich. In the top of the 7^th, Las Vegas finally got things going. Zach Lutz singled and Brandon Hicks doubled, putting runners on the corners for catcher Francisco Pena, who socked his eighth home run of the season. Reliever Sam Freeman would recover and pitch a 1-2-3 8^th inning, and closer Fernando Salas pitched a flawless 9^th inning.

GAME ONE

ALTOONA 2, BINGHAMTON 6 / 7 (Box)

Jon Niese made his rehab start in game one of the Binghamton-Altoona doubleheader. Things started out a bit ominous, with the left-hander allowing a run in each of the first two innings, but he settled down and pitched three more scoreless innings. Niese threw 80 pitches, 51 for strikes. His three walks in five innings are a bit troubling, but his six strikeouts are a good sign. All in all, I think the outing showed a very different Niese from what we saw earlier in the year. On the offensive side of things, Cory Vaughn had a break-out game, driving in four runs, three of them on a home run in the 3^rd inning. Travis Taijeron also hit a solo home run.

ALTOONA 1, BINGHAMTON 6 / 7 (Box)

This game was a make-up from the rainout on July 2^nd. The Curve scored an unearned run in the 1^st inning off of starter Mark Cohoon, but from that point on, the game would be all Cohoon and all Binghamton offense. Zack Dodson was making his first career AA start, and Binghamton sent out the welcome wagon, pegging him for six earned runs in four innings. The B-Mets scored three runs in the 1^st, one run in the 2^nd, and two runs in the 3^rd, matching their total from game one. Cohoon, meanwhile, was pitching on autopilot. The longest-tenured Binghamton Met logged his second complete game of the 2013 season, and the tenth of his career.

Gabriel Ynoa took the mound for Savannah, and the young Dominican turned in his second strong performance in as many starts, suggesting that the difficult patch he hit in mid July was just that, and not indicative of anything more. Both starters pitched well, but the Sand Gnats were able to scratch out a run, while the RiverDogs were not. Albert Cordero led off the 6^th with a double, was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt, and driven home on a Jorge Rivero single.

Short-A - Brooklyn Cyclones (23-24)

CONNECTICUT 4, BROOKLYN 1 (Box)

Brooklyn's seesaw season continues, tonight with a loss that drops them back below the .500 mark. Starter Dario Alvarez wasn't that bad, outside a 3^rd inning that saw the Tigers score four runs, three of which were unearned. Catcher Colton Plaia showed difficulty throwing runners out, allowing five stolen bases throughout the night. In the bottom of the 4^th, the Cyclones got on the board on a Juan Carlos Gamboa RBI single, but that would be all they would be able to muster all night. Of note, Dawrin Frias threw five excellent innings in relief, striking out nine batters in five innings.

For seven innings, the Pulaski Mariners shut out the Kingsport Mets. The Mets weren't so lucky- Persio Reyes had a good outing, but a few earned runs and a few unearned runs left the Mets up the creek without a paddle, down by four going into late innings. Kingsport almost came back, though. In the 8^th, they tagged Mariners reliever Leoncio Munoz for three runs. Unfortunately, they weren't able to get over the hump. Still, a 3-4 loss is better than a shutout.

Star of the Game

Cory Vaughn edges out Mark Cohoon as the Star of the Night because of his plus performance in not only one game, but two. In both halves of the doubleheader, Vaughn went 4-6, with two runs, a double, 6 RBI, and a home run, striking out only once.

Goat of the Game

There were a few poor team efforts, but there weren't too many horrible individual efforts. As a result, Colton Plaia's difficulty with baserunners stands out even more. He earns the dishonors tonight.
