MEMPHIS 4, LAS VEGAS 3 (Box)
Vegas continues to struggle on their Tennessee road trip. Yesterday's loss to the Redbirds make it six straight losses in the Volunteer state. Matt Fox turned in a quality start on the bump, but a three-run fourth staked Memphis to an early lead. The 51s clawed their way back even in the top of the eighth on a Zach Lutz RBI groundout, but Memphis struck right back in the bottom of the eighth off reliver Sean Henn. Vegas got the tying run 180 feet away in the ninth, but Fernando Salas set down Francisco Pena and Kirk Nieuwenhuis to preserve the Redbird win.
SS Ruben Tejada: 2-3, 2B, RBI, BB; A very Ruben Tejadaish .303/.366/.378 line in Vegas so far, no real reason to keep him down unless the Mets plan on trying to buy back a year of service time. 3B Wilmer Flores: 2-4, K; Going to guess it is not a coincidence that he is suddenly playing third base. PROMOAT?1B Zach Lutz: 0-4, RBI, K; Poor Rob, his dude just can't catch a break. LF Matt den Dekker: 0-3, K, E(1) C Juan Centeno: 1-3, K; Gave up two stolen bases yesterday, which is noteworthy as he's a pretty good catch-and-throw guy. Could be a serviceable backup on a team not looking to break in a rookie catching prospect next year.AA - Binghamton Mets (69-43)_____________________________________
BINGHAMTON 3, HARRISBURG 2 (Box)
The B-Mets staff acquitted themselves well, as Logan Verrett and a trio of relievers conspired to hold the Senators to just two runs, but this was the Travis d'Arnaud show. The Mets catching prospect doubled and homered in his four at-bats, and made us all very, very happy about the Buck's impending child, maybe more than the Bucks. Jeff Walters added to his record save total, notching his thirty-second of the year.
2B Danny Muno: 1-2, 2 R, 2 BB, K; .448 OBP since the All-Star break. I think he's a major leaguer. RF Cesar Puello: DNP again. Curious. I wonder if the Mets were 'encouraged' to sit him while the A-Rod thing sorted itself out.RF Travis Taijeron: 2-4, 2B, 2 K; K-rate has ticked up at Double-A. Not surprising, but cuts into his already quite fringy prospect status.1B Allan Dykstra: 0-4, 3 K; I would definitely buy an Allan Dykstra Chibba Lotte Mariners jersey. C Travis d'Arnaud: 2-4, HR (1), 2B, R, 2 RBI, K; Anytime you are ready, Mrs. Buck. SS Wilfredo Tovar: 0-4 RHP Logan Verrett: W, 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K; Bumping up on his innings limit for the year, and Binghamton is going to have some extra games to play in September this year. ST. LUCIE 11, CLEARWATER 3 (Box)
Michael Fulmer was shaky on the mound, but it didn't really matter as the Mets bats pounded out eleven innings across his six innings of work. Jayce Boyd and Cam Maron both threw three rib-eye steaks on the grill, and Kevin Plawecki and T.J. Rivera added multi-hit games to the ledger. With the win, St. Lucie kept pace with the Charlotte Stone Crabs for the division lead.
DH Jayce Boyd: 1-2, 2 R, 3 RBI, 3 BB1B Kevin Plawecki: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, HBP; Plawecki has been playing a lot of first lately with Boyd limited to DH. Don't think it's a long-term issue as the defensive profile is serviceable behind the plate.SS Matt Reynolds: 1-3, RBI, BB, K; The 2012 draft class has not exactly been lighting it up so far.RF Cory Vaughn: 1-3, R, 2 BB; Still biding his time in St. Lucie until Puello's suspension becomes official.C Cam Maron: 3-5, 3 RBI, PB; Still has a good approach and has improved his throwing, but just hasn't hit this year.RHP Michael Fulmer: W, 6 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 KREHAB ALERT:Lucas Duda continues to work on his tan, going 1-4 with a walk. He's also still playing LF.
Lo-A -Savannah Sand Gnats(21-17 // 64-43)_____________
SAVANNAH 6, GREENVILLE 3 (Box)
The Gnats wrapped up a 5-2 week with a come from behind win against the Drive. Jeff Glenn broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth with a three-run bomb, and Beck Wheeler closed the door in the bottom half, as Savannah continues to be surprisingly watchable in the second half.
CF Brandon Nimmo: 0-4, BB, 3 K, E (5); I stand by my comment that the hand is still bothering Nimmo. However, at a certain point that stops being an excuse. RHP Steven Matz: 5.1 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR; Not the greatest of starts, but any start Matz makes in August has to be considered a success on some level.
SS-A -Brooklyn Cyclones(23-22)_______________________________
BROOKLYN 7, JAMESTOWN 4 (Box)
Always dangerous to leave the Cyclones for dead. Despite a horrible start to the season and a rather uninspiring roster for prospect watchers, Brooklyn finds themselves just a game out of the division lead after their win over the Jammers last night. John Gant continues to handle the Penn League with aplomb, and he got some run support from a usually anemic Cyclones offense. Gavin Cecchini led the way with four hits, including a double, and Eddie Rohan chipped in with a two-run homer.
