Meet the Mets

Jenrry Mejia's second start did not go quite as swimmingly as his first, but he pitched well enough to win. Of course, he pitches for the Mets, so he did not in fact pitch well enough to win. The Mets offense scuffled for just two runs off Henderson Alvarez and the Marlinsgot their first win of the four-game tilt.

You might be forgiven for not noticing that there was a game last night among the round-the-clock Marlon Byrd coverage. The in-demand right fielder remained a Met as the four o'clock trade deadline passed yesterday, much to the consternation of Toby Hyde. Greg Prince is slightly more okay with it though. The Classical is just confused.

Terry Collins is considering using Zack Wheeler in relief in September to walk him up to his 2013 innings limit. This isn't really a big deal, though I imagine given that he isn't working all that deep into games right now, he could probably stay a starter the rest of the way. Anyway, this isn't a Mejia in 2010 thing.

And we might get a Travis d'Arnaud teaser trailer in the coming days as he is the odds-on favorite to replace John Buck when the catcher goes on paternity leave. You know, if you think he is ready for a week of starts, might as well keep him up the rest of the year and let him get a full dose of major league pitching in preparation for 2014.

Yesterday at AA

We all chatted about the uneventful TRAIDing deadline.

And David Moseder remembered the most infamous cab ride in Mets history.

Around the NL East

Like the Mets, the Philliesdidn't do much at the deadline. Unlike the Mets, their GM took shots at ahe beats reporting on the deadline.

The Phillies played a game as well. They lost.

At least the Nationalsgot their drubbing at the hands of the Tigers out of the way early yesterday. No matter, Bryce Harper still thinks the Nationals are the best team in baseball or something.

The Braves continued to widen their lead in the NL East with a thumping of the Rockies.

And Fish Stripes recaps (fish caps) the Marlins win over the Mets last night.

Around MLB

Here is all of Wednesday's action in one handy dandy scoreboard. Of particular note: The Rangersmade it three straight walkoff wins. That is pretty impressive.

I really, really have been enjoying David Laurila's interview series with Bob Tewksbury. Great stuff.

And the trade deadline wasn't too interesting for non-Mets fans either. Unless you are a member of Bud Norris's family, I suppose.
