Mets Daily Farm Report - 8/1/13: Trade Deadlines Come and Trade Deadlines Go, And The Farm System Remains Forever

AAA -Las Vegas 51s (60-50)__________________________________

LAS VEGAS 2, NASHVILLE 3 (Box)

The 51s trotted out the indomitable Chris Schwinden out to start, and while he wasn't good, he wasn't bad, either. Schwinden allowed a run in the 1^st on a wild pitch, and in the 5^th, after he loaded the bases, allowed one more run on a a ground ball force out. A fairly high pitch count (73) forced Schwinden out of the game. Las Vegas was unable to do anything against Sounds starter Jimmy Nelson. Finally, in the 7^th, Jamie Hoffmann pinch hit for Juan Centeno, and knocked a solo home run. Two innings later, Hoffman did it again. He stayed in the game, taking over left field for Mike Baxter, and made Backman look like a genius. Leading off the 9^th, he hit a ball over the left field wall to tie the game at two apiece. Unfortunately, Eugenio Velez hit a walk off single in the bottom of the 9^th to dash Las Vegas' hopes.

AA -Binghamton Mets (67-42)_____________________________________

BINGHAMTON 2, ALTOONA 3 (Box)

Going into the 8^th, the B-Mets had a one run lead, and seemed poised to win their 68^th game of the year. Adam Kolarek was unable to notch the save, allowing two runs. After getting the inning's first out, Kolarek allowed a single to Curve shortstop Alen Hanson. The next batter, third baseman Adalberto Santos, doubled, scoring Hanson, tying the game, and putting himself in scoring position with one out all in one fell swoop. Sure enough, one batter later, right fielder Alex Dickerson added a hit of his own, scoring Santos and driving in the go-ahead run. Binghamton was unable to get anything going in the bottom of the 9^th, wasting an excellent start from Darin Gorski, who allowed a single unearned run over seven innings. Gorski gave up four hits, walked one, and struck out eight. Altoona's first run, the game's first run, came in the bottom of the 4^th, when centerfielder Gregory Polanco walked, stole second, advanced to third on a Travis d'Arnaud throwing error, and scored on a sac bunt. The B-Mets answered that run in the top of the 5^th with one of their own, an Alonzo Harris single that scored Wilfredo Tovar. They added to that lead in the 7^th, with a Richard Lucas RBI single. But, unfortunately, they would be unable to add to, or maintain the lead.

TAMPA 4, ST. LUCIE 1 (Box)

For the second night in a row, the St. Lucie Mets fell to the Tampa Yankees 4-1. Matthew Bowman ran into a little trouble in the 1^st, but got out of it. He wouldn't be so lucky in the 2^nd, as he allowed a solo home run to Dan Fiorito. No big deal, as Dustin Lawley hit a solo shot of his own, his 21^st of the year. Things unraveled for Bowman in the 5^th. The Yankees managed only two hits and a walk, and scored three runs, but it was Bowman himself that made himself look bad, not Tampa. In the inning, he threw three wild pitches, and hit two batters. After that messy 5^th, Bowman's night was done. And, really, the ballgame itself was done, as neither team scored for the rest of the game.

SAVANNAH 5, ASHEVILLE 1 (Box)

Gabriel Ynoa looked good, allowing one run over six innings to win his 12^th game of the season. In the 2^nd inning, he allowed a leadoff double, and two subsequent groundouts moved the runner over and scored him, but that was all the Tourists would get off of Ynoa. He did run into trouble a few times throughout the ballgame, but he was able to wiggle out of it each and every time. The Sand Gnats, on the other hand, had no problem scoring runs. In the top of the 2^nd, Cole Frenzel and Dimas Ponce drove in a run each. In the 3^rd, Eudy Pina drove a man in. In the 7^th, after a double steal was perfectly executed, Jorge Rivero drove in the lead runner, and in the 8^th, Jeff Reynolds laced a line drive into the outfield that scored Savannah's fifth and final run. After Ynoa was removed from the game, the bullpen locked things down, allowing only two base runners- one hit and one hit baseman- in the game's last three innings.

Short-A - Brooklyn Cyclones (20-22)

BROOKLYN 6, WILLIAMSPORT 8 (Box)

Brooklyn lost to Williamsport for the second consecutive night, but this game featured a lot more offense than Tuesday night's game. Both teams scored one run apiece in the 2^nd inning, but the Crosscutters broke things opened in the next two, when they scored six unanswered runs, three in the 3^rd and three in the 4^th. Cyclones starter Dario Alvarez lasted only three innings, giving up four runs. His replacement, Dawrin Frias, didn't fare much better, giving up four runs over four innings. Frias did strike out an impressive nine batters during his relief outing- five swinging and four looking. The Cyclones did manage something of a comeback, though it did fall short. In the 5^th inning, they scored two on a Tomas Nido two-run home run. In the 8^th, L.J. Mazzilli doubled in a run, and later scored when Williamsport second baseman Sam Dove made a throwing error on a routine play at first, failing to get Jared King out. Finally, in the 9^th, they scored another run when James Roche doubled and Nido drove him in. Ultimately, the six run cushion the Crosscutters built themselves early on proved too tall an order to overcome.

KINGSPORT 9, ELIZABETHTON 4 (Box)

A sizable rain delay threatened to postpone or end things early, but the rain cleared up- and, it was a good thing too, as Kingsport absolutely dominated Elizabethton. Things didn't start off well for Kinsport, as starter Yoan Gonzalez gave up two runs in the first inning. He quickly settled down, and as he did, the bats came alive. In the 3^rd, Amed Rosario doubled and came home on a wild pitch that also walked Yeixon Ruiz. In the 4^th, Pedro Perez knocked an RBI single, and a fielding error on a Rosario groundball led to another run. In the 5^th, in the rain that eventually caused a delay, Kingsport put up a six spot. After Elizabethton put a fresh pitcher in the game, an error and two walks loaded the bases and set the stage. Jeff Diehl got things going with an RBI single. Jeyckol De Leon kept the train going with an RBI single of his own. Pedro Perez came up, and sure enough, hit an RBI single. Then the rain came, and they ran and hid their heads. And, if they called the game, they might as well been deads. The game wasn't called however. After Rosario and Champ Stuart struck out, Richie Rodriguez came up as a pinch hitter, replacing Yeixon Ruiz. He came through, lacing a double to center that cleared the bases. Elizabethton scored a run in the 5^th and 6^th innings, but the added runs barely put a dent in Kingsport's lead, and they went on to win the game in convincing fashion.

GCL METS 1, GCL MARLINS 4 (Box)

Not much going on here. Just another GCL Mets loss. The Mets got on the board first, scoring a run in the 2^nd inning when Jhoan Urena doubled and Jose Garcia drove him in, but the team failed to push any runs across the plate afterwards. Starter Marcos Molina had a little hiccup in the 4^th that cost the team a run, but things went downhill in the 6^th, when he put a bunch of men on, three of whom came home to score.

Star of the Night

With his strong performance, Darin Gorski is our Star of the Night. Seven innings of four hit, one (unearned) run ball always looks nice, and the 8:1 K:BB split only enhances things. With Jeff Paternostro seemingly poised to receive #HailSatin cease-and-desist letters, do we go back to GORSKI?

Goat of the Night

Matt Bowman is our Goat of the Night. While his five inning, four run performance isn't totally horrible, his peripherals were: three strikeouts to two walks, two hit batsmen, and a whopping three wild pitches. Bowman has otherwise looked good for St. Lucie (and Savannah), so let's hope we can write this off as nothing more than a blip.
