New York started the Grapefruit League season with a victory.
The Mets opened their spring training schedule earlier today with a road game against the Braves, a game that was not televised but aired on WOR. Dillon Gee got the start, and six other Mets pitchers appeared in the game after his two innings of work. Here are some things that happened:
- Wilmer Flores left the game after he was hit by a pitch on his wrist, but he was reportedly just fine after the game. Shortstop crisis averted!
- Gee gave up a couple of runs, didn't strike anyone out, and walked two in two innings.
- Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who is almost certainly destined for the major league roster since he is out of options, went 4-for-4 and took an early lead in the battle for the King of Spring Training.
- Johnny Monell, a catcher the Mets picked up over the winter who figures to begin the year backing up Kevin Plawecki in Triple-A Las Vegas, hit a home run.
