The Mets have too many starters, and Profar is likely to miss the entire season.
So here's an interesting Mets trade rumor: Dillon Gee plus some additional pieces for Jurickson Profar. That report comes via Chris Cotillo over at MLB Daily Dish. The Mets have more starting pitchers than they can reasonably use this year, though converting Gee to a relief pitcher seems to be the solution in the short term. And Profar, of course, is set to miss the entire 2015 season following shoulder surgery after missing the entire 2014 season.
Before injuries put a major crimp in Profar's professional career, he was widely regarded as one of the best prospects in the game. Baseball America ranked him baseball's best prospect before the 2013 season. Still just 22 years old—his birthday was just a couple weeks ago—Profar has 341 major league plate appearances under his belt. He wasn't all that impressive in them, as he hit just .231/.301/.343 in them while playing his home games in the hitter-friendly confines of the Ballpark in Arlington.
But if the Mets could buy low given his injuries, that would be a pretty appealing move. The team might have a couple of good shortstop prospects in Gavin Cecchini and Amed Rosario, but adding Profar to the mix could be a major boon to the team's future. It's possible that Profar does not overcome the injuries, but the chance that he does seems to be worth taking on the risk.
