Is this season the last time the All-Star second baseman will wear orange and blue?
Are Daniel Murphy's days with the Mets numbered?
Murphy is set to hit free agency this year and up until this point there has been no communication between the Mets and Murphy's representatives regarding a contract extension. According to Marc Carig of Newsday, Murphy is very open to re-signing with the Mets:
"I've always been open to an extension, I've never approached the blessing of playing in the big leagues with thinking I need to maximize every single dollar I can get out of this game. I've made a whole bunch of money already."
The future of Murphy's relationship with the Mets is unclear. Although he was the team's lone All-Star last season, the Mets don't seem to have made much—if any—effort to sign him to a long-term deal, and based on past experience Sandy Alderson is not very keen on giving contract extensions.
Rival executives believe that Murphy will garner a lot of attention during free agency because of his above-average batting. Said one exec:
"Some will want the bat and accept the below average glove if necessary. He's young enough, the bat is strong enough to warrant a multi-year [deal]."
Murphy will turn 30 on April 1 and has spent his entire big league career with the Mets.
