After being non-tendered by the Mets in December, the outfielder has signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves.
Eric Young Jr. has signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Young's contract includes an invitation to spring training, where he’ll compete for a roster spot in Atlanta's outfield.
Back in December, the Metsnon-tendered the 29-year-old, who hit just .229/.299/.311 in 316 plate appearances last season. For his career, which started in Colorado in 2009, Young has hit .252/.320/.332. During the 2013 season, the Mets acquired Young for starting pitcher Collin McHugh, who struggled mightily in four starts with the Rockies that year but had a very good season for the Astros in 2014 after picking him up off waivers from Colorado.
A switch-hitter, Young's greatest asset is his speed. He stole 30 bases for the Mets last year despite relatively limited playing time, and he was caught stealing just six times. If he makes the Braves' roster, he will join an outfield that figures to be much worse than what the team rolled out over the last couple of years.
