Greg Karam says:
"Gavin Cecchini did not have a standout season in terms of raw numbers, but he showed steady progress and has positioned himself for a potential breakout in 2015. Cecchini started last season in Savannah and struggled in the month of April, but he rebounded to hit .296/.360/.477 in May, which ended up being enough to earn him a mid-season promotion to High-A St. Lucie. Once there, Cecchini struggled mightily again, hitting just .200/.274/.257 from the time of his promotion on June 19 through July 22. However, from July 23 through the end of the season on August 31—a span of 154 plate appearances—Cecchini hit .266/.364/.430 with a 13.6 percent walk rate and a 9.1 percent strikeout rate. It also included a stretch of 106 plate appearances during which he struck out just three times while producing a .176 isolated slugging. Clearly, this is a prospect who was making adjustments and figuring things out against older competition.
"A review of video from early in the season revealed improved mechanics at the plate, specifically quieter feet. He had also introduced a leg kick that did not seem to affect his ability to make contact. Defensively, he displayed above-average range but rushed routine plays, resulting in errors—something that could improve with more repetitions. In 2015, his age-21 season, Cecchini will most likely be assigned to Double-A Binghamton, where his improved offense and ability to stick at short have him poised for a breakout campaign."
