The Mets made one selection and had a handful of players taken over the course of the Rule 5 Draft.
The Rule 5 Draft, in which players that are not on the 40-man roster can be selected by other teams, took place today. The Mets made one selection, taking Twins left-handed pitcher Sean Gilmartin in the major league phase. Meanwhile they lost several players in both the major and minor league phases.
Across two levels in 2014, Sean Gilmartin had a 3.71 ERA over 145 innings. He was consistently effective against lefties, who hit just .201/.219/.235 against him. He could fit into the Mets' bullpen as they search for a left-handed relief pitcher to complement Josh Edgin.
In addition to their one pick, the Mets lost a handful players.
During the major league phase, Logan Verrett was selected by the Orioles. He went unprotected after posting a 4.33 ERA over 162 innings with Las Vegas as a 24-year-old.
Greg Peavey, another upper-minors pitcher, was taken by the Twins. Over two levels he recorded a 4.64 ERA while throwing 143 innings as a 25-year-old.
Long Island native Cam Maron was selected by the Reds. The catcher repeated High-A and batted .282/.387/.362.
Randy Fontanez, taken by the Dodgers, split the year between High-A and Double-A and pitched a 3.74 ERA over 65 innings.
Finally, shortstop Juan Carlos Gamboa was selected by the Padres. He spent the year in the Mexican League where he hit .306/.386/.472.
