It's been a long journey for Jenrry Mejia since Jerry Manuel foolishly tried to turn him into a reliever in order to save his job. In the three years that have passed, Mejia has suffered multiple injuries and lost plenty of luster off of his prospect status. The expectations were pretty low coming into his start this afternoon but wow, did he surpass every single one of them. Mejia tossed seven fantastic innings, allowed seven hits, walked none, and struck out a career-high seven batters. His fastball looked great but even better, he showed a slider, change, and curve, each with tons of movement and he got 11 swings and misses on off speed. It's just one start but let's hope this Mejia is here to stay. Remember, he's just 23 years old.
The offense, meanwhile, got started early as Daniel Murphy popped a long solo home run in the first inning and then added a two-run shot in his next at bat, both off of Jordan Zimmermann. Murphy drove in five runs in total on the afternoon. Juan Lagares also had a big day, going 3-4 with a walk and two stolen bases from the leadoff spot. He hit there because Eric Young Jr was scratched prior to game time. Lagares' on base percentage is now .302 on the year. Hooray! Up 5-0, the Mets busted out for six runs in the ninth against Ryan Mattheus and Drew Storen, capped off by Ike Davis' sixth home run of the season. Yes, you read that right. It went over the fence, it was worth three runs. You still don't believe me? Well, you'd better.
