Arizona's new front office has made a splash in free agency.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed outfielder Yasmany Tomas to a 6-year, $68.5 million deal. The Cuban defector was the subject of much offseason discussion, and was seen as one of the top international free agents on the market. Tomas was being courted by multiple major league teams, and the Metsscouted him as recently as September. Tomas should serve to improve the Diamondbacks' outfield production, which Fangraphs ranked 26th in baseball in 2014.

Tomas seemed to be a pricey proposition for the risk-averse Mets from the start. Steve Sypa profiled Tomas over the summer, and noted that talent evaluators had expressed concerns over his bat speed and defense. Our own Sean Cunningham wrote that the Mets shouldn't pursue Tomas because, although the Mets need to take some risks, Tomas had too many flaws to guarantee considerable money. And any hope of the Mets signing Tomas was dashed with the signing of Michael Cuddyer.
