The 26-year-old had a great first season in the big leagues.
Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom has won the National League Rookie of the Year award for 2014. The news comes as no surprise, as deGrom had a 2.69 ERA and 2.67 FIP in 140.1 innings over 22 starts, a season that put him in a league of his own among National League rookies.
Coming into the season, deGrom did not gen a ton of prospect attention, which was understandable given how he pitched in 24 starts between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas in 2013. He got off to a good start in Vegas this year, though, and he was promoted after seven starts. Initially, deGrom was set to take over a spot in the Mets' bullpen, but thanks to Dillon Gee's lat strain, he found himself in the Mets' rotation instead.
Thanks to deGrom's great rookie campaign, the Mets find themselves with more major league starting pitchers than there are spots in a major league starting rotation heading into 2015. Matt Harvey is set to return from Tommy John surgery, joining deGrom, Zack Wheeler, Jon Niese, Bartolo Colon, and Dillon Gee as options for the team's starting rotation. Rafael Montero and Noah Syndergaard could be options for the rotation fairly early in the season, too, so it will not be a surprise if the Mets deal at least one starting pitcher this winter.
