Jeremy Hefner enjoyed a great run prior to the All Star Break, but on Wednesday, for the second start in a row, he was tattooed by gopher balls. The Braves drew first blood on a long solo shot by Evan Gattis in the top of the second, then extended their lead on a three-run bomb from Dan Uggla and a two-run shot from Andrelton Simmons in the fifth.
That was more than enough for Tim Hudson, who rocked Mets batters gently to sleep all evening long. The veteran righty racked up a season high 9 Ks through 7 2/3 innings, with all but two of those on called strike threes. He cruised until the eighth, when he got badly spiked in the right leg by Eric Young while covering first base, and eventually had to be carted off the field. The Mets managed to score two runs after Hudson's injury, but nought else, and immediately gave back those two runs with a sloppy ninth inning.
Full recap to come.
