The Mets took an early lead against Cliff Lee with back-to-back homers by David Wright and Marlon Byrd in the bottom of the first. They tacked on in the fourth with a three-run homer from Juan Lagares (no really) to give themselves a stunning 5-0 lead over Lee and the Phils.
That would prove to be more than enough run support, because as rare as a three-homer game for the Mets offense might be, the real story of today's game was, of course, Matt Harvey. If anyone feared all the the hype of the All Star Game, Jimmy Fallon, supermodel girlfriends, naked photos, etc., would do him any harm, Harvey put those fears to rest all afternoon. Harvey pitched 7 scoreless innings, scattered 4 hits, collected 10 Ks, recorded 22 swinging strikes, and struck out the side in order twice. The Phillies never mounted anything close to a threat, as Harvey was in total command.
In conclusion, Matt Harvey remains very good at baseball.
Full recap to come.
