The Mets won their first game of the second half of the season, despite a shaky outing from Zack Wheeler and some ninth-inning shenanigans from Bobby Parnell and Josh Satin. Our heroes had a 5-2 lead with two outs and no Phillies on base in the bottom of the ninth inning when Satin made an ugly error on a Michael Young ground ball to extend the game. The next batter, Chase Utley, hit a two-run home run into the Pepsi Porch off Parnell to cut the Mets' lead to 5-4. Domonic Brown followed with a double, making Mets fans, and probably Satin too, a little uneasy. However, Parnell induced Darin Ruf to line out to second, and the ballgame was over.
In his sixth big-league start, Wheeler was pulled with two outs in the fifth inning, finishing with a line of 4.2 IP, 7 hits, 2 runs, 5 strikeouts, and 2 walks. The line would have looked even worse if Gonzalez Germen hadn't stranded the three runners he inherited from Wheeler by striking out Delmon Young with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning. Germen, Scott Rice, and LaTroy Hawkins combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings between Wheeler and Parnell's appearances.
Four of the Mets' five runs came against Phillies starter Cole Hamels. Marlon Byrd and Juan Lagares notched RBI singles in the first inning, and another run came around to score in the frame on an Anthony Recker ground out. That gave the Mets a 3-1 lead, countering Jimmy Rollins' home run on the third pitch of the game. David Wright and Daniel Murphy added RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively, which turned out to be important given the finish.
Mets win, Phillies lose!
