Mets Daily Farm Report - 7/18/13: Future Aces Wild

AA -Binghamton Mets (59-36)_____________________________________

RICHMOND 6, BINGHAMTON 5 (Box)

Binghamton still finds themselves in search of that elusive 60^th win of the season, dropping game two of the three game series against the Flying Squirrels. The first couple of innings were an old-fashioned slobberknocker. Richmond scored in the top of the 1^st, and Binghamton scored in the bottom of the inning. Richmond scored in the top of the 2^nd, and Binghamton scored in the bottom of the inning. Richmond failed to score in the top of the 3^rd, but that didn't stop Cesar Puello from hitting a towering fly ball that just kept going and going, landing over the wall for his 16^th home run of the season. The reason why the Flying Squirrels didn't score in the 3^rd? After Joe Panik and Adam Duvall got on base, first baseman Mark Minicozzi hit into a triple play- Wilfredo Tovar snagged the line drive out of the air, and with both runners going on contact, stepped on second and tagged Duvall to complete the play. Suffice to say, with all these hits and runs, starter Noah Syndergaard didn't have a particularly good outing. Fresh off of his Futures Game appearance, Syndergaard lasted five innings, allowing seven hits, two home runs, and three earned runs, walking three and striking out five- his worst start since being promoted to AA, and his first real clunker since April. Richmond tied the score in the 5^th, and then took the lead when they scored three runs in the 6^th. Jim Fuller was completely ineffective, walking the bases loaded and then hitting a batter- the opposint pitcher- to force a run in. He was removed after failing to record an out, and Adam Kolarek was inserted into the game. He induced two ground balls, but the B-Mets were unable to turn either of them into double plays, instead settling for one out during both attempts. A flyball ended the inning, and while Kolarek could've been better, things could've been worse, as well. In the bottom of the 7^th, manager Jose Lopez' ejection may have fired up his club- they scored two runs on a Puello sac fly and a Rhyne Hughes single, coming within a run of Richmond. Unfortunatley,that would be as close as they would come. Just like Pedro Feliciano juggled danger in the 8^th, but came out unscathed, Flying Squirrel reliever Cody Hall was able to strike out Puello and pinch-hitter Allan Dykstra in the 9^th to strand Justin Turner on second base.

ST. LUCIE 9, BREVARD COUNTY 3 (Box)

The offense knocked in a run in each of the first three innings, while Hansel Robles held the Manatees scoreless, and St. Lucie found themselves with a comfortable lead early on. Brevard County scored their first run in the bottom of the 5^th, but St. Lucie scored in the top of the inning, so the Mets stayed ahead by three. Manatee bats finally came alive in the bottom of the 6^th. Robles allowed a few hits, in addition to hitting a batter, leading to two runs being scored, and his being yanked from the game. In the 8^th inning, Kyle Johnson lined a double into left that drove in two, increasing St. Lucie's lead back to three runs. Not comfortable with a lead that slim, the offense went back to work in the 9^th inning. Jayce Boyd took one for the team and got plunked, Dustin Lawley singled, and Kevin Plawecki walked to load the bases. Matt Reynolds came to the plate next, and he too walked, forcing in a run. A Yucary De La Cruz groundout scored another, and a walk to Johnson forced in another run. The Manatees had no answer to the offensive deluge.

Would you rather hear the good news first, or the bad? Alright, I'll give you the good first: Gabriel Ynoa struck out an impressive eight batters in five innings of work last night. The bad? He gave up a much less impressive (or more impressive, depending on how you look at it) ten hits, and was tagged for six runs, three of which were earned runs. His counterpart, Tyler Glasnow, or the Power bullpen, had no such trouble. Glasnow gave up a run in the 1^st on a Stefan Sabol triple, but limited Savannah to just that run.

Short-A - Brooklyn Cyclones (13-16)

MAHONING VALLEY, BROOKLYN (Box)

Brooklyn scored in the 1^st inning on a pair of doubles by Patrick Biondi and L.J. Mazzilli, but the real fireworks didn't begin until the 3^rd inning. Brooklyn combined for four singles and a walk, and with the help of a wild pitch, a hit batsman, and an error, the Cyclones scored five runs in the inning, batting around. Perhaps lulled out of their daze, the Scrappers finally got on the board after that big inning, interrupting Seth Lugo's shutout bid. They scored a run in the 4^th, in the 6^th, and two in the 7^th, while Brooklyn only scored in the 6^th, slimming down their lead considerably. The Scrappers scored one final run in the 9^th, but Brooklyn held on to notch the victory.

Star of the Night

There weren't any real good pitching performances, so the Star of the Night has to go to a bat, and that usually makes it a little harder. L.J. Mazzilli and Dustin Lawley were both finalists, with their 3-4 performances, but the honors are going to have to go to Cesar Puello; he might not have gotten as many hits as the other two, but his stat line for the night was more varied, and had a few more positive features than just pure hits.

Goat of the Night

Neither Syndergaard nor Ynoa had particularly good games, but Jim Fuller's atrocious performance puts their collective struggles to shame- at least they recorded an out.
