What can you say about Zack Wheeler's outing today? Wheeler had it going right from the start, pounding the strike zone and shutting down his former organization over seven innings as the Mets defeated the Giants 7-2 to complete the sweep. This was the Mets' first sweep in San Francisco since 1994.
Wheeler cruised throughout his seven frames, allowing just a run on three hits while walking three and striking out five. The Giants really didn't manage much hard contact against him and only squeaked out their run in the seventh when Wheeler was tiring. It was easily Wheeler's best showing in the big leagues. The Mets' offense, meanwhile, knocked out Matt Cain after just two-thirds of an inning where he allowed three runs. They added more runs against reliever Mike Kickham, who absorbed Cain's innings. Marlon Byrd launched his 15th home run to straight away center field and Wheeler even got in on the action, as he clubbed a long run-scoring double over the center fielder's head in the 6th.
