Romero is 16 years old and reportedly signed for $300,000.
We got word from Mets Farm Report this morning that New York has signed 16-year-old shortstop prospect Yoel Romero thanks to MLB's international free agent signing period opening this morning.
According to Baseball America, Romero is six feet tall, weighs 175 pounds and features "good" agility, but "average" arm strength. On offense, Romero is a right-handed hitter and is said to have "fringy" speed along with power to hit the ball in the gaps. Just based on that report, he sounds like Ruben Tejada with a little more power. That would be either good or not-so-good, depending on whether or not you think Tejada can keep up his ridiculously high walk rate this season.
Speaking of Tejada, he's another example of a shortstop signed by the Mets as an international free agent. Jose Reyes and Wilmer Flores were also obtained this way, so the Amazins have a decent history with having these types of players pan out. While Tejada was signed out of Panama and Reyes is from the Dominican Republic, Flores and Romero are both from Venezuela.
