Shaun Marcum will not pitch again this year, according to Ed Coleman of WFAN. The 31-year-old right-handed starter made fourteen appearances for the Mets, twelve of which were starts.

While he never quite looked comfortable on the mound—stretching and adjusting his arm, shoulder, and neck—Marcum kept taking his turn in the rotation. There was, however, plenty of speculation that he would hit the disabled list after his most recent start.

Marcum threw 78.1 innings in total for the Mets with a 5.29 ERA and 3.66 FIP. Both his strikeout and walk rates were slightly lower than his career norms, but Marcum's .322 batting average on balls in play against suggests he was giving up hard contact.

The Mets signed Marcum to a $4 million deal with playing time incentives that could earn him up to $8 million. Fortunately for the Mets, Marcum did not reach any of the benchmarks necessary to earn any of the incentives.

Update: Per Adam Rubin, Marcum was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome and will undergo surgery on Monday.
