The Mets dropped the series opener in Pittsburgh.
The Mets lost to the Pirates in the first of four games in Pittsburgh, as Daisuke Matsuzaka struggled in his start. In six innings, he allowed five runs on five hits while striking out four and walking four. The Pirates scored first with a run in the third inning, but the Mets answered with a run in the fourth.
Pittsburgh took the lead again on a Little League type of play with runners on first and third, two outs, and the Mets in a defensive shift, but the game turned on a three-run home run by Gregory Polanco off Matsuzaka in the fifth. The Mets didn’t score again until a pair of doubles by Daniel Murphy and David Wright to begin the eighth, but they squandered the rest of that opportunity and did not score again in the game.
