The 22-year-old infielder goes back to the minors.
Following their loss to the A's last night, the Mets optioned Wilmer Flores to Triple-A Las Vegas to clear a spot on the active roster for Juan Lagares, who's set to be activated from the disabled list today. With that, the team has just one shortstop on its roster—Ruben Tejada—and six outfielders: Bobby Abreu, Curtis Granderson, Lagares, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Chris Young, and Eric Young Jr.
Flores has bounced back and forth between Vegas and New York this season, but he didn't play much with the Mets. In June, he made just 35 plate appearances. In total, he has hit just .225/.253/.300 in 83 plate appearances in the big leagues this year. He simply could not get playing time over Tejada, who has hit .234/.348/.303 but has drawn seven intentional walks to boost that on-base percentage. Whether or not Flores will play shortstop consistently in Vegas is in question now, too, since Matt Reynolds was promoted there from Binghamton recently and has played three of his four games at the position.
Lagares has been one of the bright spots for the Mets this year when healthy. On top of his continued defensive prowess in center field, he's hit .295/.337/.429, good enough for a 116 wRC+ on the year. He and Curtis Granderson should play every day, which leaves the other four outfielders vying for time in the third spot in the outfield.
