Taylor Teagarden conveniently injured his hamstring and was placed on the disabled list, saving the Mets from having to make an immediate decision on their backup catcher.

As was reported here last night, the Mets have recalled catcher Travis d'Arnaud from Las Vegas today and he'll likely be in tonight's lineup. To make room for him on the roster, the Mets have conveniently placed catcher Taylor Teagarden on the 15-day disabled list with what's being termed a strained left hamstring.

Outside of a grand slam in his Mets debut, Teagarden hasn't done much with the bat since the Mets promoted him from Las Vegas on June 8th. Filling in for d'Arnaud, he hit a paltry .143/.200/.250 in 30 plate appearances. Considering the recent struggles of Anthony Recker at the plate and the fact that Teagarden is out of options, it seemed like the Mets would still have to choose which player to keep around. By placing Teagarden on the disabled list, they're able to push that decision off into the future and see if Recker's bat can get going again. Unless Teagarden injured his hamstring in the last 24 hours, this seems like a bit of blatant roster manipulation on the part of the Mets but it should be noted that Teagarden was receiving treatment for a hamstring issue earlier in the year in Las Vegas.
