The Brooklyn Cyclones played up in Wappingers Falls, New York on Thursday night.
The Brooklyn Cyclones beat the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-0 last night in Wappingers Falls, New York. I went to the game and got my first look at a bunch of players—whether they were just drafted a couple of weeks ago or had previously been lower in the Mets' minor league system—in game action. This is far from a scouting report, but here's a quick rundown.
Amed Rosario
The most exciting position player on the Cyclones' roster went 1-for-3 with two walks. He grounded out on a hard-hit one-hopper to second base in the first and struck out swinging in the third. But he took three straight balls leading off the sixth inning, took one strike, and took ball four. His patience paid off as he came around to score on a Luis Arrizurieta triple.
Rosario started the seventh, too, and singled on a hard line drive off left-handed pitcher Darren Fischer's leg. At first, though, he took a very conservative lead, as he drew a couple of pickoff attempts from the pitcher before attempting to steal second. He was thrown out pretty easily. He certainly looked fast, but the small lead did not do him any favors. And in the ninth, Rosario led off once again, worked a full count before fouling off a 94 mile per hour fastball, and then drew another walk. His walk rate last year was just 4.9 percent, but he wasn't swinging at pitches outside the strike zone last night. His walk rate in the very early going in Brooklyn sits at 11.1 percent.
Defensively, Rosario was not challenged, as just two ground balls were hit his way. He fielded both pretty easily, and one of them is in the Brad Wieck video below. It's hard to tell because of this cameraman's delayed pan to first base, but he did throw the runner out on the play.
Octavio Acosta
As a 23-year-old in the New York-Penn League, Acosta won't get much in the way of hype. Last night, he sat at 85-86 with his fastball, occasionally touching the upper-80s, and got swings-and-misses with his slow curve. He was perfect through three-and-two-thirds before giving up a hit and ultimately threw six scoreless with four strikeouts and zero walks.
Josh Prevost
Taken by the Mets out of Seton Hall in the fifth round of the draft this year, Prevost threw plenty of 82-83 mile per hour sliders in one inning of relief. When he went to the fastball, it sat in the upper-80s and topped out at 90. He gave up two singles, and a couple of the three outs he got were hit pretty hard.

Brad Wieck
Wieck relied heavily on 73 mile per hour curveballs and sat at 87-89 with his fastball. He touched 91 a couple of times with the pitch, too. He struck out two Renegades hitters, one swinging and the other looking, and gave up just a single in his inning of work. And here's a video of part of his outing.
