A deadly series of two-out RBIs from the Cardinals—two coming after costly Daniel Murphy miscues—doomed the Mets and their punchless offense as they drop the second game in St. Louis.
The Cards jumped out to an early lead when Yadier Maolina hit a solo shot to start the bottom of the second. The Mets responded when David Wright hit his own leadoff longball in the top of the fourth, but St. Louis recaptured the lead with back-to-back two-out RBI doubles by Jon Jay and Matt Holliday in the bottom of the fifth. A pair of Daniel Murphy errors in the sixth (one scorebook, one mental) led to two more runs on a pair of two-out hits, these by Kolten Wong and Peter Bourjos. That gave the Cards a seemingly cavernous four-run advantage, but even when their lead was slimmer, the Mets' offense wasted a number of scoring opportunities and appeared—as it has for most of this season—lost without a map. A leadoff homer by Lucas Duda in the ninth merely prolonged the agony.
Full recap to come.
