The Mets can only muster up two hits, as concern over the offense continues.
Zack Wheeler had performed well coming into today. As Chris McShane noted, in Wheeler's last four starts, he had pitched to the tune of a 2.70 ERA and a 2.18 FIP. One consistent problem, however, is that Wheeler has just been throwing too many pitches. Wheeler lasted only 5.0 innings today, and managed to pitch poorly, giving up 4 earned runs on 6 hits, while walking 3 batters.
To put the blame all on Wheeler for this one would be poor form, since the offense was particularly atrocious. The Mets threatened in the fourth inning after a David Wright hit-by-pitch, a Bobby Abreu walk, and then a wild pitch, but Lucas Duda and Chris Young struck out to end any real threatening the Mets did for the rest of the day. The Mets only mustered two hits, one from Ruben Tejada in the second and another in from Lucas Duda in the ninth, and Chris Young put together a "golden sombrero" which drew the ire of the fans.
The loss drops the Mets to 30-38 on the year, and on a day where Sandy Alderson said the team was close to being a contender the team made him look excellent by laying an egg.
