Final Score: Mets 12, Brewers 5 — Amazins score early and often against bumbling Brewers

This was a game that only a mother could love, assuming that mother was a Mets fan.

The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a bases-loaded walk and a run-scoring throwing error. The Brewers responded immediately with two runs of their own in the bottom half, but, in a theme that would play itself out all night, executed some awful baserunning that might have cost them more. The top of the second brought more misadventures, errors, and headscratching decisions by the Milwaukee infield, capped by an Ike Davis RBI infield single (!) and a two-run Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit, putting the Mets up 5-2. Another Kirk RBI single and yet another Brewers error led to two more runs in the fourth.

Zack Wheeler was wild and only retired the leadoff man once, but somehow kept the damage at a minimum as he staggered through five innings. A long solo homer by Juan Francisco in the fourth was his only blemish after a shaky first inning, and though he loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, he squeaked through it with a popup and a strikeout. He was ably assisted by the opposition, who insisted on running themselves out of rallies all night long.

The Mets tacked on via RBI singles from John Buck in the sixth and Juan Lagares in the eighth, then ran away with it by scoring three times in the ninth, a frame that included Niewenhuis's fourth RBI of the night. Greg Burke allowed two ultimately meaningless runs in 1 2/3 innings, but the bullpen was otherwise on point.
