Final Score: Nationals 6, Mets 3 — Baserunning and defensive miscues prove costly

Baserunning mistakes and a crucial error hurt the Mets in game three of their series with the Nationals.

The Mets twice made the third out of an inning on the basepaths and a Ruben Tejada error led to two unearned runs in an uninspiring loss in DC.

With two outs in the first inning, Daniel Murphy went too far rounding third base after a Curtis Granderson fielder's choice, and he was tagged out by Anthony Rendon to end the inning. Replays suggested that Murph might actually have been safe, but Terry Collins wasn't confident enough to challenge the call. The Mets didn't score in the frame.

With two outs in the sixth inning, and the score 5-3 Nationals, Juan Centeno was thrown out at second base trying to advance after he hit an RBI single off Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann. The Mets didn't reach base again after that against Nats relievers Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard, and Rafael Soriano.

Tejada boofed a ground ball in the third inning that led to a pair of unearned runs charged to Zack Wheeler. It was another shaky start by Wheeler, who allowed three earned runs in six innings, striking out five while walking two.

The Mets are 20-23, three games out of first place in the NL East. They are off Monday and start a three-game series at home Tuesday against the Dodgers.
