Juan Lagares hit a home run and took a home run away from Jayson Werth as the Mets beat the Nationals 5-2.
The Mets halted a three-game losing streak in Washington, DC today, as they beat the Nationals 5-2. In his return to the starting lineup, Juan Lagares went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, and he robbed Jayson Werth of a home run as well. His efforts supported Bartolo Colon, who gave up just two runs in eight strong innings.
Our heroes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against ineffective Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez. Eric Campbell drove in two runs with a bases loaded single, and Lagares followed with an RBI single of his own. Two innings later, Lagares hit a two-run homer off Gonzalez to give the Mets a 5-0 lead. Gonzalez departed after just three innings of work.
Colon allowed a two-run home run to Ian Desmond in the fourth inning, accounting for the Nats' only runs on the day. Colon settled down after that, and he retired the final 11 batters he faced. He had some help from Lagares, though, who did this to Werth in the sixth inning:
Colon's final line: eight innings, five hits, two runs, five strikeouts, one walk. Not bad! Jenrry Mejia pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.
