The veteran reliever has been cut.
The Mets have released Kyle Farnsworth, according to Jon Heyman. The 38-year-old right-handed relief pitcher had a 3.18 ERA and 4.51 FIP in 19 appearances with the team. Signed over the winter, the Mets cut Farnsworth at the end of spring training but quickly recalled him after Bobby Parnell went down to Tommy John surgery at the beginning of the season.
Farnsworth had the second-best ERA in the Mets' bullpen among pitchers with at least ten innings there. His 5.29 strikeouts and 3.18 walks per nine were nothing to write home about, but the results have certainly been worse for several other Mets relief pitchers, particularly Jose Valverde and Scott Rice. Per Mike Puma, Farnsworth had a 45-day waiver that allowed the Mets to release him without paying his full major league salary.
While the Mets haven't announced a corresponding move yet, it would appear Josh Edgin will join the team. The lefty was terrible in 17.2 innings of work with the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s, as walks were a major problem.
