Masahiro Tanaka shut out the Mets.
Coming off a pair of wins in the Bronx, the Mets were shut down by Masahiro Tanaka and lost to the Yankees in the first of two games in Queens. Rafael Montero had a decent major league debut allowing three runs in six innings of work, one of which scored because of a terrible defensive decision and play by Eric Young Jr. in left field. The other two came on solo home runs by Yangervis Solarte and Mark Teixeira.
The Mets’ bullpen was mostly effective in relief of Montero, but Carlos Torres gave up a run on a would-be inning-ending dribbler off the bat of Derek Jeter that he and Anthony Recker failed to field in time to record that out at first base as the Yankees’ fourth and final run of the evening crossed the plate.
