Just when it seemed the Mets' bats would never wake up, the offense plated three runs to tie the game in the ninth and Ruben Tejada singled in the game-winner in the eleventh.
Following a week of utter offensive ineptitude, the Mets banged out sixteen hits and six walks in a 5-4 extra-innings win over the Phillies on Mother's Day.
An improved offensive output notwithstanding, the Mets still trailed the Phillies 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth. Eric Young led off with a double against Antonio Bastardo, and Daniel Murphy followed with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center. David Wright struck out swinging for the first out of the inning, but a Chris Young double chased Bastardo, who was replaced by Friday night's starter Roberto Hernandez.
Hernandez couldn't hold the lead, though, allowing a single to right by pinch hitter Bobby Abreu and a slow ground out by Juan Lagares that sent Young home with the tying run.
Jeurys Familia and Scott Rice combined for two scoreless extra innings, and the Mets loaded the bases with one out against Jeff Manship in the bottom of the eleventh. Ruben Tejada, needing only an outfield fly or to step into an inside fastball, roped a single to left to bring home Chris Young with the game-winning tally.
