The veteran backup infielder has been jettisoned.
The Mets announced this evening that they will designate Omar Quintanilla for assignment tomorrow in anticipation of another roster move. The 32-year-old backup shortstop has been with the Mets for the past two seasons and spent an early chunk of the 2012 season with the team before he was traded to the Orioles.
In 31 plate appearances this year, Quintanilla hit just .207/.258/.241, which translates to a .230 wOBA and 43 wRC+. Starting shortstop Ruben Tejada hasn't been any better this year, but he at least has age on his side.
As for the corresponding move tomorrow, all speculative signs point to Wilmer Flores joining the Mets and getting a shot as the team's everyday shortstop in an attempt to give the lineup a boost. There's little doubt that Flores could be a better hitter than Tejada, at the very least. If it's not Flores, perhaps the Mets would call up another pitcher to give a struggling bullpen an extra option.
