Jenrry Mejia tossed 6.2 shutout innings and David Wright and Travis d'Arnaud each notched an RBI single to lead the Mets over the Cardinals.
It's not quite Matt Harvey in 2013, but Jenrry Mejia in 2014 sure has been fun to watch. Mejia threw 6.2 shutout innings tonight, striking out seven while walking three. He kept the Cardinals hitters off balance and did not allow an extra-base hit. Mejia was also helped by strong Mets defense, notably two great plays by Ruben Tejada. Scott Rice, Carlos Torres, and new closer Kyle Farnsworth combined to pitch 2.1 innings of scoreless ball to clinch the shutout. Congratulations to Farnsy on his first save as a Met!
With Mejia and co. in control, the Mets offense didn't need to produce much. David Wright notched an RBI single in the third inning against Cardinals starter Tyler Lyons, and Travis d'Arnaud did the same in the sixth inning. d'Arnaud also hit a long double to right center field in the fourth inning, just missing a home run. Curtis Granderson continued to struggle, as he went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. He did reach base on a hit-by-pitch, though.
