The Long Island native joins the 51s as depth for the big league team.
Left-handed pitcher John Lannan has accepted his assignment and will report to the Las Vegas 51s, the Metsannounced this evening. The 29-year-old lefty and Long Island native made five appearances for the Mets this year and gave up seven runs in four innings of work. That 15.75 ERA led to his demotion and Daisuke Matsuzaka's promotion.
Before this year, Lannan had not made a major league relief appearance, and he made just five relief appearances in his minor league career, the most recent of which was in 2007.
As a starter in the bigs, Lannan has a career 4.12 ERA and 4.55 FIP with 4.7 strikeouts and 3.4 walks per nine innings. In Vegas, he'll give the Mets another arm that could serve as depth if the team ends up with a need in the rotation or bullpen. Of course, his path to getting back as a starter is a long one, with Jon Niese, Bartolo Colon, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee, and Jenrry Mejia in the major league rotation and Rafael Montero, Noah Syndergaard, and perhaps Jacob deGrom waiting in the wings—depending on service time considerations, of course.
