Dillon Gee pitched seven scoreless innings and the Mets' offense put up just enough offense to support his effort as New York completed a sweep in the desert.
The Mets jumped out in front on an Anthony Recker solo shot in the second, then extended their lead with a Krik Nieuwenhuis sac fly in the fourth and a run-scoring groundout by Dillon Gee in the sixth. Gee retired the first 14 batters he faced, allowed just three hits through seven innings, and made a heads-up play at second base to extinguish one of Arizona's few threats.
Though Gee only expended 72 pitches to get through seven, he was removed from the game at that point, seemingly to protect against his usual struggles when facing a lineup for a third time. The Mets tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth thanks to some ugly Arizona fielding, which proved crucial once Jose Valverde allowed two solo homers and a single in the bottom half. Ultimately, Valverde's bad mojo was no match for Arizona's bad mojo, and though the Diamondbacks ended their scoreless streak against him, the Mets held on for the sweep.
