They couldn't do it in nine innings, and they definitely couldn't do it before midnight, but the Mets won last night...uh, this morning. Oh whatever, just go to bed all of you.
The Mets overcame a little bit too much Cowgill and Mr. Valverde's Wild Ride to down the Angels 6-3 in the second game of their series in Anaheim.
Former Mets "everyday centerfielder" Collin Cowgill put his stamp on the early portion of the contest. He threw out Eric Young, jr trying to score on a sac fly in the top half of the first and singled and scored in the bottom half. The Mets tied the game at 1 on a Lucas Duda home run in the second, but the Angels would jump back into the lead with a pair of solo home runs off Mets starter Jon Niese, including a sixth inning blast from Cowgill. Those would be the only other blemishes on Niese's record, and the lefthander posted a solid 7+ in his second start of the season.
The Mets would capture their first lead of the game in the seventh with a three-run rally, keyed by RBI singles from Juan Lagares and Anthony Recker. They would add a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on a bases loaded single from Omar Quintanilla. As Gary Cohen is fond of saying, it was the irregulars getting it done for the Metropolitans.
The 6-3 lead was turned over to Jose Valverde in the bottom of the ninth. Papa Grande got two quick outs, but David Freese found a hole for his hundred-hopper to squirt through, and Erick Aybar worked a rather inexcusable walk to bring up Raul Ibanez as the tying run. Ibanez obliterated a 1-0 fastball from Valverde, sending the game to extras for the second straight night.
The tenth and eleventh frames passed quietly. The Mets loaded the bases in the twelfth, but Juan Lagares flailed at a 2-2 pitch in the dirt. The Mets finally broke through in the 13th as Recker came through again, launching a solo shot over the left field fence, and John Lannan set the Angels down in order in the bottom half to mercifully bring our night/morning to an end.
Congratulations to MetsFan4Decades; her effort in the Game Thread embiggens us all.
