The Mets' bullpen's 20.1-inning scoreless streak ended when Jeurys Familia hit Hank Conger to force in the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh.
Despite Dillon Gee's declaration that he intended to finish strong in his third start after having faded late in his last two, he was unable to live up to those expectations. Going into extras for the second time in this young season, the Mets fell to the Angels 5-4 in eleven innings.
The Mets got on the board early with singles in the top of the first by Eric Young and Daniel Murphy. David Wright failed to pick up the RBI by grounding into a double play, but Young scooted home for an early 1-0 lead. It didn't take the Angels long to answer, however. Mike Trout hit a solo shot off of Gee in the bottom of the first to tie it up. The Angels continued putting runs on the board early when Chris Iannetta singled home Howie Kendrick in the bottom of the second to break the tie and put the Angels up 2-1.
But the Mets continued with the back-and-forth when Travis d'Arnaud hit a solo bomb in top of the third to bring the game back to a tie. And in the top of the fourth, Josh Satin doubled to bring in Andrew Brown and Curtis Granderson to give the Mets a 4-2 lead. Gee settled down until the bottom of the sixth when he gave up a two-run home run to J.B. Shuck, knotting the game at 4-4. From there, the Mets bullpen held, as did the Angels' pen when Tyler Skaggs departed after seven innings.
But then the bottom of the 11th happened. Jeurys Familia found himself in trouble after Raul Ibanez singled over the shift, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a ground out. Familia was instructed to intentionally walk the bases loaded before hitting Hank Conger with a pitch, and the Mets lost a heart-breaker.
