Mets Daily Farm Report, April 10, 2014: Akeel with a capital 'K'

Triple-A - Las Vegas 51's (5-2)_______________________________________

SACRAMENTO 7, LAS VEGAS 3 (Box)

Cesar Puello batting 7^th tonight; still not getting the logic behind batting him at the bottom of the order. Noah Syndergaard took the mound for the 51s, but he just didn't have his best stuff, looking a little shaky with his fastball command. The Mets' top prospect needed 90 pitches to get through five innings, walking two and striking out two. He allowed the leadoff batter to reach base in the 1^st and 2^nd innings, and both men came around to score, putting the 51s in an early hole. In the bottom of the 4^th, Bobby Abreu hit a single up the middle and Eric Campbell drove him in with his second home run of the year, continuing the torrid pace he's been on since spring training. Syndergaard gave the lead back quickly, allowing two runs in the top of the 5^th on three singles and a double. Going into the 9^th inning, the River Cats were only winning by two runs, and with Danny Muno and the top of the order due up in the bottom of the 9^th, the possibility for a walk off victory certainly existed. Dana Eveland crushed any hope for that coming to pass when he pitched the top of the inning, allowing two runs to score on three consecutive singles and a sac fly. Still, the 51s would not go down into the night quietly. In the bottom of the inning, Matt den Dekker walked and came home to score on a Bobby Abreu single. After Wilmer Flores laced a line drive of his own, Eric Campbell stepped to the plate. He, unfortunately, struck out looking to end the threat, and the game.

The B-Mets plated seven runs for the second consecutive night, toppling the SeaWolves and winning their first series of the season (with the potential to sweep it when the make-up game from April 7^th postponed game is played on June 14^th). The offense kept hammering away inning after inning while Matthew Bowman kept Erie in check.

ST. LUCIE 5, JUPITER 2 (Box)

The St. Lucie Mets recovered from yesterday's embarrassing loss, beating the Hammerheads 5-2. Matthew Koch got the start for St. Lucie, spinning six solid if unspectacular innings. The Mets got on the board first, plating three runs in the 3^rd inning. A chain of four hits scored two runs and a Cam Maron double scored the last. The Mets scratched out another run in the 5^th and in the 7^th. The Hammerheads plated a run apiece in the 5^th and 6^th, both charged to Koch, but Randy Fontanez pitched two scoreless innings and Beck Wheeler successfully navigated through a shaky 9^th to earn his second save of the year.

The wheels just fell apart in the third inning, giving Augusta a commanding 8-0 lead early in the game:

In the 6^th, the Sand Gnats managed to scratch out three runs on singles by the middle infield duo of Gavin Cecchini and L.J. Mazzilli, but the offense was otherwise asleep at the plate. There isn't much else to say about this game, except that Akeel Morris was absolutely dominant in his three innings of relief. After walking the first batter he faced, he set down the next ten, nine of them coming via strikeout- he struck out four in the 8^th inning, uncorking a wild pitch that allowed the batter to steal first and prolong the inning. Of his nine strikeouts, eight were swing-and-misses.

Star of the Night

Akeel Morris had an incredible night. His biggest blemish on the night, a wild pitch, actually helped enhance his overall line for the night- he wouldn't have been able to strike out four batters in the 8^th inning if that errant pitch hadn't happened.

Goat of the Night

Ricky Knapp and John Mincone are going to share the goat award for the night, as both contributed to that terrible 3^rd inning.
